It is easy to feel a little down and out when you hear a myriad of sad stories. However, if you open your eyes just a little, you’ll see that there is an incredible amount of positivity in the world and especially in the world of Bingo. The charity, 52Lives, is just one example of this fact.
According to the founder of 52Lives, Jaime Thurston, the charity operates on the basic premise that people are good. All told, there are 52 celebrities and over 100,000 contributors who completely agree and GalaBingo is one of the increasing numbers of organizations committing time and money to this noble cause.
GalaBingo isn’t your traditional online bingo site, it donates part of its winnings from selected games to charity. So much so, that it has helped hundreds of lives over the last couple of years. With GalaBingo you can join the fun and make a winning for as little as £0.25 but at the same time, know that part of your money is going to good use – saving lives.
How does 52Lives Work?
The premise surrounding 52Lives is as simple as it is brilliant; it works to help change someone’s life every single week. Tens of thousands of people around the world nominate someone in need of help. 52Lives chooses one, shares their story on social media and its website and issues a request to its 100,000 supporters. This request is simple: Help them change this person’s life. GalaBingo is a major contributor and is constantly helping people through generous offerings.
There is an assumption that we have to do something extraordinary to help change another person’s life. In reality, it is a lot easier than you could ever imagine. Here is a quick list of things 52Lives and GalaBingo have done to make a long-lasting impact on the life of a human being:
- Built a sensory shed for a South London toddler who was sadly losing her sight.
- Created video messages of support for a young boy who was being bullied.
- Paying for a little girl and her grandmother to go on holiday after the tragic death of her mother.
- Purchasing teeth for a man in Alabama, United States.
The list goes on and on. It also proves that you don’t have to change the world to put a smile on someone’s face. Let’s take a closer look at some of the stories behind those who have benefitted from the great work performed by 52Lives and GalaBingo.
Life #130 – Oscar
Oscar is a little boy from Yorkshire who was born prematurely and has a condition known as severe bilateral dystonic cerebral palsy. As a result, he is unable to walk, sit without assistance, speak or feed himself; and he is only able to communicate with his eyes. He was in desperate need of equipment to improve his quality of life, in particular, a specialist car seat. Without it, he would have had to travel on public transport; a nightmare for his parents given Oscar’s condition. The problem was: the car seat alone cost £2,000!
52Lives learned about Oscar’s plight, alerted its supporters, and the response was heartwarming. Not only did the charity raise over £2,500, easily enough for the seat, generous contributors, including GalaBingo also donated gifts to his sister. His mother Caroline was overwhelmed: “Thank you – Words will never be enough.”
Life #111 – Tegan
Tegan was a normal energetic and happy 9-year old girl until she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer; a Wilms tumor in her kidneys which sadly also spread to one of her lungs. Instead of enjoying her summer holidays, Tegan was forced to undergo painful chemotherapy treatment. 52Lives asked for donations in the form of Gift Cards for Amazon (toys for Tegan and her siblings), Next (new clothes as Tegan lost a lot of weight) and Groceries (to cover the family’s essential needs).
As always, the response from the public was incredible. Not only did 52Lives receive over £500 worth of gift cards, but an incredible number of people also sent messages of support to Tegan and her family. Perhaps the most wonderful response of all was from the children at Barley Croft Primary School who sent ‘Get Well’ cards, drew pictures, wrote stories and sent a video message of support.
Life #95 – Logan
52Lives is dedicated to helping people from all over the world, and this is shown by its support of Logan, a 3-year old boy in Australia. Logan was diagnosed with Phelan McDermid Syndrome before his first birthday. It is an extraordinarily rare condition that affects only 1,300 people around the world. It causes a host of medical issues including breathing problems, low muscle tone, and a sensory processing disorder.
Logan was in dire need of multiple pieces of medical equipment, especially a bath seat to help raise him in and out of the bath more easily. It costs approximately AU$3,000 which is the equivalent of £1,500. Overall, 52Lives contributors donated $2,350, and Logan got his bath seat. His parents also received badly needed massage vouchers!
